Almost any bike can be ridden in Taipei. With the exception of a few bridges and outer surrounding areas, Taipei is flat. For that reason, I like riding a single speed. The drivetrain is a touch easier to maintain and keep clean in this rainy, rainy town. If you plan on cycling in other cities, a good multi-gear mountain or road bike would be preferable. And you can't beat the utility of a folding bike. Ride to a train station, fold it up, and throw it in a bag. Get off the train and you're back on your way. I wouldn't recommend it, but you can also bring full-sized bikes on the MRT but are subject to a charge and a number of rules and regulations. Bagged full-sized bikes are ok. Folding bikes are considered carry-on as well but I'm not sure if they have to be bagged. They probably should as the city doesn't want you getting all that chain grime onto their lovely public transportation system.
Outerwear:
- Definitely try to shy away from cotton. Get one of those workout shirts that wicks away moisture.
- If it looks like rain, get one of those folding ponchos. It's still not great, but it might keep you dry enough if your trip isn't too long.
Some other recommendations:
- Wear a helmet. Many people don't and it is not really enforced but better be safe than sorry.
- If you ride a road bike the only recommendation I have is to ride on tires that are at least 28mm thick or 25mm and at reduced pressure. Except for the dedicated bike trails, most roads are not smooth. Your butt will thank you.
- Taipei is a bike friendly place. In the more population dense areas if you get a puncture, you'll probably be within close proximity of a bike shop. Knowing basic bike maintenance and a couple extra tubes doesn't hurt either.
- You will be cut off by cars. Unless they're blatantly doing something illegal and stupid, let it slide. I view it as a force of nature, like rain, or snow. It's going to happen and I can't stop it by punching through the driver side window and ringing that person's neck no matter how much better I think it'll make me feel.
